Late Spring Musings

The farm stand has syrup for sale and will so for the foreseeable future. Garlic scapes are not far off and garlic will be for sale later this summer and fall.

The decision to scale back for the 2011 growing season was made in order to build Rachel and Stephen’s house across the street. Before Peter’s death in July 2010, after a seven-month battle with cancer, he passed along this poignant piece of advice, “Don’t even think of trying to run a market garden and build a house at the same time. You will not do either of them well.”

After completing the 2010 growing season, last fall was spent milling a larger portion of the lumber needed to construct the home. With the eager help of Dan Kusch, trees from not more than a few hundred feet from the house site were turned to lumber, stickered, and stacked.

The 2011 logging season brought nearly perfect cold and sunny logging conditions during the month of January. With the aide of Fred Lavigne and his skidder, Stephen and Fred pulled the remaining logs off the property needed to build the house as well as a substantial amount of firewood.

The sugaring season this year was outstanding! With Dan Kusch on board, we gathered daily record quantities of sap, which kept us boiling for more 12-hour stretches than we’d like to admit. Our first boil was February 18 and our last was April 10. In the end, we fell 10 gallons of the record 2005 season.

Garden space was planted to full season forage crops last fall and this spring garden ground remaining was planted to cover crops of clover, rye and vetch, as well as oats. Attempting to scale back also meant reducing the flock size to a manageable number. With garden ground now growing pasture we could feed fewer animals, better feed, from right off the farm. Of course, a few beds were planted to potatoes, carrots and onions and there were those 5 beds of garlic planted last fall that will be harvested in July… (right about the time Rachel is 38 weeks pregnant!!)

Summer is slowly coming to a close but that does not been the veggies aren't still abundant and superb. Corn is still going strong as well as kale, chard, collard greens, peppers, tomatoes, leeks, onions, watermelons and more!
The farm stand is still stocked daily so be sure to get your vegetables for a nice warm dinner to warm you up on these increasingly chilly but wonderful evenings. Don't forget a carrot or two for the kids lunchboxes as school begins again!

Old Home Week extra market!

You can tell that the summer is at its peak when the list for the farm stand is as such:

All can be found down at the farm stand and at all the markets. Tomorrow we will be at Tamworth and Sandwich from 9 till noon so come on out to enjoy the sunshine and get some wonderful fresh organic produce still warm from the sun.

We are also in the process of harvesting all our garlic so if you feel like learning how to harvest and string garlic come on up and join the ruckus!

Even if we don't like this constant harsh humid heat, its hard to argue with the fact that this sun and heat is great for the garden.
One thing this glorious sun is good for is TOMATOES! We had our first red ripe tomato yesterday, the earliest we have ever had! It was reported to be very very good. Very soon indeed there will be enough for the stand; we will keep you posted!

As for what is ready and in the stand: there is plenty of lettuce, mesclun, cucumbers, tons of zucchini, kale, cherry tomatoes, and lovely yummy peas!

Don't forget to stop by either Tamworth Farmers Market or Sandwich Farmers Market tomorrow between 9 and noon!

Its that time of the week again!

We will be at the Plymouth Farmers Market this afternoon from 3pm to 6pm(see earlier posts for exact location). So come on by and get the freshest of the fresh organic vegetables.

If you cannot make it to Plymouth but still crave some yummy vegetables, the farm stand will be stocked all day.
There is also fresh produce at Heaths Supermarket.
We have our first delivery to Lemongrass Restaurant so if your heading there tonight your sure to find some of our fabulous mesclun in your salads.

Hi all you wonderful people! Just wanted to remind you that the Booty Family Farm LLC will be at the Plymouth Farmers Market today from 3pm till 6pm.

We will be stocked with lettuce, mesclun, garlic scapes, rhubarb, zucchini, and freshly ground cornmeal. No strawberries today sorry folks. We have to wait for nice sunny weather to pick them. With that said we will be picking them tomorrow to have at the Sandwich Farmers Market and possibly the Tamworth Farmers Market as well.

Strawberries are in folks! Come on up to the farm stand which is stocked full of yummy fresh picked strawberries! $4.50 a pint for fresh organic strawberries. you won't find them anywhere else around.

You might want to hurry because they usually sell out fast.

Keep your fingers crossed for this sun to stay out so they will keep on popping out more berries!

Things on the farm are moving right along on the farm thanks to a little bit of a rain and this glorious sunshine. Lettuce and mesclun are officially at Heaths Supermarket as well as Mocha Rizing and our farm stand.

For those of you who haven't heard, the Sandwich Farmers Market has been moved onto the Sandwich Green this summer which is the area of grass between the Sandwich Home Industries and the Sandwich Post Office. Vendors will be there every Saturday, unless there is severe rain, from 9am till 12 noon. We the Booty Family Farm will be at the farmers market when we have strawberries! I will keep you updated to when that might be.

Hi all again! Just a brief notice. The Booty Family Farm LLC will be at the Plymouth Farmers Market today from 3pm till 6pm. For those of you who don't know the market is located at the Episcopalian Church on Highland St in Plymouth!
We have beautiful lettuce, mesclun, parsnips, fresh ground corn meal, and a little maple syrup. Come and check it out and say hi!

If one sits back and thinks about farming, they will realize that what farmers are actually doing is harvesting the sun.

Plants are solar collectors.
The chloroplasts in plants convert the solar energy into food.
That solar energy then makes the plants grow.
The solar energy that feeds the plants then feeds the people when they consume the plants.

Therefore: we are sun farmers.

With all that said, right now is our peak season. The temperatures are in the 80s(in the shade!) and with very few clouds in the sky the gardens are soaking up all the sun and loving it. Corn especially will be benefiting from this as it loves weather like this and it should be growing like crazy right now.

The FUUNNNN has ARRIVED!!
Corn is in the ground folks! Several plantings to be exact! Sweet Corn as well as Indian Corn is in the ground as of this morning.

Potatoes are looking great and are incredibly tempting although if we tried to get some now they wouldn't have amounted to much yet. The peas are almost ready to be trellised and the strawberries are putting out blossoms that will turn into yummy berries not fast enough. Guess we will have to be a little more patient.

What we don't have to be patient for anymore is though is: Lettuce! You can find it in the farm stand and once we pick up boxes from Heaths it will be at Heaths. I will keep you updated on when the first lettuce can be found there.

More lettuce is being transplanted today, squash to be started, as well was many more goodies.

Hi All!

We just had 11 sheep sheered and have some beautiful (dirty but still beautiful) wool that would be great to get out of the barn. If anyone is interested just let us know!

The garden is still moving along, more manure to be spread today so we can get more in the ground. Yesterday we got cucumbers and zucchini in the ground and they look great! The strawberries and peas that were put in the ground last week as also looking great and are making us crave both.

Although we are very ready for some nice warm and sunny days, the chilly windy weather is great for keeping the bugs away which is a blessing for us farmer workers.

As for the garden, the strawberries are looking great and so are the peas. The tomatoes are finally in the newest greenhouse and are doing great. More and more beds are being prepared for outdoor lettuce finally as well as corn. Cucumbers, zucchini, and summer squash are about to be put into the ground as well.

There is some beautiful cut lettuce in the stand as well as gorgeous leeks, parsnips, and carrots.

Strawberries, potatoes, and peas are now in the ground outside and looking great! Spring finally feels like its supposed to. (above is the new potato area which only took two hours to do thanks to our amazing tractor and its new implements !)

Also! Another lamb, our 16th of the season, was born first thing Monday morning. Little Maybelle is looking ever so cute and comfy in the barn. And no her name is NOT Maybelline! She has nothing to do with make-up. She is just a very cute lambkin.

With fall like weather in the air it would seem like we skipped a few seasons; however that is not the case! We have peas now planted in the ground outside and strawberries are going in today! There is also mesclun finally planted outside in the ground. More beds are being prepped and shaped daily for more yummy vegetables to put into soon.

The farm stand is stocked with stellar kale, mesclun, spinach, parsnips, and potatoes. There is still some syrup left for sale so come on up and get it while it lasts!

Summer is on its way everyone!

The beds are being prepped, several plantings of lettuce are on their way, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and peppers are also well on their way! Just looking outside and seeing the trees popping with green and also seeing that bright yellow thing in the sky is a tip off. :)

Mesclun and spinach are at Heath's Supermarket yet again and both can be found at Mocha Rizing and in our farm stand.

Our syrup from this season is delicious and dwindling fast so come on up and get it while its available.

After our weekend of snow, the fluffy white stuff has finally melted away again(except the snow pile right by our door) and we are back to getting the beds all ready to plant.

Yesterday and the day before were very fun days of building sheep fences and making sure all the old ones were in working order so we can let our flock out to pasture. It's weeks earlier than last year!

The stand is still stocked with lovely spinach, mesclun mix, parsnips, and potatoes so come on up any time!

So even though we seem to be jumping around in seasons it really is supposed to be spring so that means gardening. There might be snow on the ground but our first batch of lettuce is now in the ground(in the greenhouse) and we are just waiting for the tomatoes to be big enough to put into the new greenhouse. Our oldest greenhouse is packed full with little plants growing away which will in no time at all turn into full grown onions, leeks, more lettuce, mesclun greens, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and cucumbers.

While the snow puts a halt to putting much more vegetables in the ground there is still plenty to do on the farm. So its off to getting the fences ready again for putting the sheep to pasture, shearing them when they finally dry out for all this wet, and just the never ending maintenance that comes with a farm.

Today is a very fall like day temperature wise and true to fall form the parsnips were dug and in the process of being washed. If anyone is the Plymouth area and familiar with Local Foods Plymouth you can find them for sale online with deliveries on Thursday. Our farm stand will be stocked with them as well.

Stephen is working hard to put the final touches on the new greenhouse(it's doors!) so that we can put our beautiful looking tomato plants into them when they are ready.

Don't forget the farm stand is also stocked with lovely mesclun, kale, and spinach!

Sugaring season is over and our syrup supplies are dwindling fast so come and get it while it is here!

The new greenhouse is DONE! Ok well it needs doors but other than that its DONE! Next step(after doors) is to get the tomatoes into it.

Speaking of yummy, juicy, sensational tomatoes, the master farmer Peter Booty is very excited to get his hands into some dirt and we are heading out soon to put those adorable little tomato seedlings into bigger pots(not exactly pots but you get the point).

In other news, spinach is now at Mocha Rizing in Sandwich and at Heath's Supermarket in Center Harbor (if its still on the shelves!). There is also spinach of course in the farm stand at the bottom of drive way along with the years first mesclun mix. :)

In no time at all there will be lettuce and plenty of other goodies in the stand!

Yesterday was our first delivery day! Spinach can now be found at Mocha Rizing in Center Sandwich and Heath's Supermarket in Center Harbor (we like to be in the Center of things).

Already we are all out of 1 gallons of syrup and our 1/2 gallons are going just as fast. If you are looking for some of this years wonderful maple syrup, come and get it because it is spectacular and in short supply.

Our third greenhouse is well on its way to being finished and just needs its plastic covering so we can start putting tomatoes into it.

Tomatoes, eggplants, green peppers, and cucumbers have all been started in their little trays and are growing like...well like weeds I guess you might say...although these taste better and we don't plan on tearing them out of the ground until fall when they are all done.

What a sunny day can do...

Spring is most definitely here ladies and gents!

Today was an extremely productive day!

1) finished washing all the buckets and lids from sugaring

2) got several tricky trees cut down (very fun to watch)
(how many loggers does it take to take down 1 tree? 8! the other answer: we arent loggers! we are arborists!)

3) our 3rd green house is being put up as I type!

All of this could not be done with out our amazing community of friends who have come to help today. Thank you all so much for everything, every single one of you is a joy to work and we are honored to know such kind and wonderful people.

On sillier note: today was the first day that an ever so silly girl was able to run about barefooted. Spring at last! :)

Mother Nature's April Fools joke???

What is this big bright yellow warm thing up in this strange blue sky?! Someone once told me its this amazing thing called a sun but I am a little skeptical. :)

Enough of that now though, the second planting of lettuce is in the greenhouse! In no time at all we will have fresh lettuce again! We still have amazing overwintered spinach as well!

The sugaring season is indeed done with all the buckets pulled and the washing process is full steam ahead! With such a short season, the syrup will go fast so come and get it while you can!

Well folks, even though we are very sad to admit it, the sugaring season is over. The funky weather has confused the trees so much (not to mention ourselves) that they have shut off.
If you are reading this today (Sunday March 28th), and are in the neighborhood, come on up to the sugar house for the last boil of 2010. While there is no sap to boil there is still some in pans and that needs to be cleaned out before we can put away the evaporator for the summer.

So come on up today for one last soak in the steam. Even though today is the last boil anyone is welcome to come stop by the farm anytime to see our many very cute lambs and the sugar house always is stocked with syrup and now spinach! If you don't find what you are looking for come up to the second house and we will be happy to assist you.

Quick survey: is this a goat or a sheep?

Even though astronomically speaking it is now officially spring, the weather man seems determined to tell us otherwise. Or maybe its Mother Natures early April Fool's day joke. The cold weather that is haunting Sandwich,NH might possibly bring the sugaring back for a day or two! If that does not happen and the cold air still comes in, there is not much planting we can be doing except in trays that stay in the house. Stephen and I are able to keep busy with the routine maintenance of the farm like cleaning the barnyard up and lifting the garden shed up off the ground with the tractor and putting beams under it to save it from the usual wear of time and water flowing under all summer long. The whole washing station area next to it is now completely raised up and ready for summer to come and with that endless hours of washing.

However! The plants in the ground seem impatient to come out and are popping out all over the place! The garlic(as seen in the picture!) has already come up several inches!

Don't forget there is plenty of syrup for sale in the sugar house as well as fresh picked spinach that overwintered just beautifully!

Miracle anyone?

Today Stephen and I collected all 537 buckets and got about 80 gallons of sap which will most likely create a little more Grade B syrup. Unless the cold weather predicted for the next few days and weekend brings us a miracle and starts the sap running again, this really is the end of the 2010 sugaring. The last few steps to really wrap it up will be to take down all the buckets and wash them. Probably one of our favorite parts of sugaring.
For those of you who are itching for some real signs of spring, since the weather no longer feels like it, there is fresh spinach in the sugar house for sale! It overwintered in the ground spectacularly and tastes delicious!

While the weather has pretty much stopped the sugaring season, the farm is heading full steam(or close to it) into the rest of the farm spring business. Yesterday was more logging to get rid of the trees that would have shaded the new greenhouse spot. This morning a couple of sheep got their spring haircuts which will make them all clean and white for at least one day. The other sheep have finally stopped teasing the newly sheared ones and seemed to have let it go. More planting over the next few days and next weekend is bucket washing we think. Although bucket washing may sound as tedious as washing the dishes it really is not and we always seem to fill the air with soap bubbles, good(and bad) music, flying buckets, and always laughter. If you are driving around the neighborhood next weekend and see or hear any of the above stop on in; its even more amusing than watching us dancing in the sugar house while boiling. :)

While yesterday might have possibly been our last boil for the 2010 sugar season, Stephen and an amazing family friend of ours are outside cutting down a few trees in order to make it possible to put up our third greenhouse without it being in the shade. Hopefully we will be able to get that up in the next few weeks and have it ready for when we plant our tomatoes! In no time at all the gardens will be sprouting with amazing green things for one and all to come up and visit.

Well folks, the sugaring season is most likely coming to a close this week. While the weather for next week is predicted to be colder than this week, the buds are coming out on the maples and it will be a little to late. Have no fear though! For those among you who crave that ever so good Grade B maple syrup: we made some yesterday that is exceptionally tasty! (available in all sizes!)

Even though we are sad to have the sugar season go, this early spring means we can get a jump on planting in the greenhouses! Spinach, cutting lettuce, mesclun mix, onions, and leeks are in the greenhouses and already sprouting(photos coming soon!)

In true Far From the Madding Crowd (Thomas Hardy novel I highly recommend), today might be sheep shearing day. Time for those fluffy new moms to lose their winter coats and be (for one day at least) all shiny and white.

Green Sap?

Happy Saint Patrick's Day all!
In honor of St. Patty's Day I was thinking of turning the sap green but then decided that that probably wouldn't be good for the sap or the boiling process. Oh well, we will just have to do some Irish dancing while collecting and boiling later.

This warm weather, although fabulous for the gardens, is not so great for the sugaring season. We might be wrapping up soon but don't worry! We have syrup in all sizes in Dark Amber and Medium Amber so come on up to the sugar house. If steam is rising we are boiling and love to have visitors.

If we aren't boiling when you come up, we have a whole new flock of lambs in the barn who's fuzzy little faces will immediately make you fall in love with them.

The sap is flowing and we are boiling almost daily! The season is completely dependent on the weather and it looks like we are going to have a great week for sugaring... If you see steam coming from the sugar house stop on by for a visit!

for a mole or a mouse" as Parker likes to say while walking in the woods. Or in this case the hole is for US! We had a foundation hole dug and poured this fall and now we are busily working to get it covered before the snow flies. Oak beams were milled last week that form the carrying bodies for the hemlock and spruce floor joists and decking. Things are relatively quite in the gardens though there are carrots and parsnips still to be dug. A new site was layed out for a greenhouse that will be erected next spring and the parts were delivered last week...

The fun never stops

With four farmers' markets a week, two delivery days, and keeping the farm stand stocked there was very little time to keep the blog updated this summer. Fortunately (or unfortunately for the vegetables) there is fall. With one farmers' market left on Saturday mornings in town and one day of delivering vegetables there is more time to do things like build a house... or dig multiple hundred pounds of carrots, butcher a couple pigs, shear some sheep, deliver a few cords of wood, or sleep.

The farmstand is STILL OPEN! and will be until there is no longer any lettuce left in the greenhouses. And after that we will most likely have carrots and parsnips available for sale from the root cellar.

After transplanting 75 dozen (that is not a typo) lettuce in the rain yesterday we are drying out a little this morning and are thinning carrots and transplanting brassicas (broccoli and cabbages). Our summer help continues to be amazing and we are excited that garlic and peas are finally here. We expect corn in the next week and a half and tomatoes are reddening in the greenhouse! Call ahead for a farm tour!

No rest for the weary during July. With some sunshine and warmer temps this week the garden is responding. With LOTS of thanks to our summer help Galen Muskat, Will Henriques, and Nancy Hagstrom as well as veteran/professional Robin Booty next years strawberries are weeded, the carrots are thinned and weeded, the corn is cultivated, wood is almost all stacked... the list of tasks completed is endless and growing!

Come visit us at farmer's markets in Sandwich and Tamworth on Saturday from 9-12 and Tuesday afternoons in Madison from 3-6. Or swing by the stand for daily surprises!

Meet Alvin

Alvin was the first triplet born to Rerun one of our star moms! His two brothers Simon and Theodore easily out weigh this little fellow. While the other lambs gorge themselves on molasses covered oats and grain, Simon prefers to keep a slim physique and eats only hay. From birth he has had tiny little horns and a tuft of hair that make him easily identifiable and he is definitely one of our favorites!

Come meet the lambs: Shimmer, Shine, Salt Shaker, Thirteen, Bullwinkle, Hugs, Kisses, Orphan Andy, Annie, Midnight, Popeye, Olive Oil, Iodine, Simon, Alvin, and Theodore. (And there is still one ewe who might be pregnant!) The barn is bustling with activity as the new lambs test out their new bouncing, butting, and climbing skills.

We tapped the first trees today on the farm. The sound of plink, plunk, plink was heard as sap slowly dripped into the buckets! Other taps had frozen icicles hanging from the spiles and the weather is looking good for the coming weekend...

Please come by the farm to meet the new lambs or swing by the sugar house if you see steam coming out!

Lambing Time!!!

Monday, February 11 we had our first two additions to the flock of 2009! The first lamb was born sometime between 2am and 6am and her sister was born around 830 am with a little helpful tug from Peter with Parker and Steve watching. The third lamb was born Tuesday afternoon with the whole family cheering along! The fourth lamb was born on Friday the 13th.

What have we been up to?

Winter is logging time. All the wood for the next year needs to be out of the woods before sugaring season. Snow storms quickly slow progress down in the woods as trails need to be bucketed out with the tractor, trees need to be shoveled out so that stumps are cut flush with the ground, and limbing branches with the chainsaw in thigh deep snow makes for long days.

Inside the barn, the ewes are getting bigger and bigger and we are eagerly awaiting our first lamb of the season. Cold temperatures make for a harsh entry into the new world and watch is kept around the clock (including each night at 130am) to check on the pregnant ewes. We will post pictures as soon as we get our first arrival!

Sawmill is up and running!

We spent Saturday fine tunning the new sawmill across the street at Rachel & Stephen's house site. Parker sawed some beautiful hemlock 2x4s and is already psyched to be sawing 2x12 17' rafters next! Please feel free to stop by if we are running the mill.
